Books or Movies?

“We could listen to music, watch a movie, watch television or any other activity that delights our senses and yet, they would be short of the intensity that reading can cause.” (Ivan Rosales)1. When people hear a song that they like it has put before their eyes the image that someone else sing? Or when they watch an image like in movies affects their sense of touch? However, what people prefer between books and films? According to an open debate, only 40% of people say that movies are better than books (Debate.org)2. I dare say that just reading gives to people the necessary delight for all their senses. The power of reading gives to people the pleasure of activates the imagination and creates emotional connection.

Feed the imagination is something to be enjoyed while reading. As Elizabet Scott said: “I love books. I love that moment when toy open one and sink into it you can escape from the world, into a story that’s way more interesting than yours will be ever be”. When people read the description of a landscape, they visualize what they have known so far, and each person can imagine in different ways. Reading shows different world through the pages of a book without travel, it is enough with details that the book gives. In addition, people have the option to imagine as their favorite character of the book that they read.

While people read, they create emotional connection with the book. It is impossible for readers do not creating an emotional relation when they spend part of their free time between the pages of their book. Part of this connection is that people might be identified with any of the characters from the book develop a feeling that they get to know the characters. Also, they can feel exactly what the character feel. When people are captivated in a book they create a series of emotion while they reading.

Proponents also point that they can watch a movie in any technological device laptops, even in their cellphones. The big problem with any electronic device is that they are discharged too fast and probably people do not finish watching the movie. Also, people can’t use them everywhere they want to because in some places like in airplanes and banks are prohibited. If people think about it they should not to take the risk of use it in public spaces, it is not safer for them. However, who do care about use book in airplanes or banks? Or who worried about stealing a book? Probably for a thief a book is only a lot of sheets, it does not know is the sentimental value that could mean for the person who reads it. Books are completely portable, safer, and do not need batteries, and are safer.

Books are always better than movies. They put the imagination to flight and create an emotional link with people who read it. Also, they are safer, mobile, and do not need source power. However, I can’t change the mind of people do not like read this is their choice. Sadly, they are losing the opportunity to meet other worlds through the pages of a book with many details and exact points that seem you are inside of the book.

  3. Yenifer, thank you for continuing to share your passion for books. Sometimes it seems like an uphill battle since movies are so much more popular these days, mostly for convenience and because they require so much less time and effort, I'd guess. Still, I agree with you that there is no way to compare the depth of the experience between the two. Reading does indeed take us so much deeper into our own imagination and enables us to really connect emotionally with the characters and the story in a way that is just not possible with a 2-hour movie. I hope you always continue to find deep pleasure in the written word.

  4. Yenifer, for me, reading book is good, and movie also helps people to reduce stress. If people know how to have time for both of them, that is great. Thanks your topic.

  5. Hey girl! You are right. I prefer reading books than watching movies... because our imagination is better than our vision, why? Well, I think we created new sensations and emotions when we read and with the movie we just felt like our eyes watching. Ly

  8. I agree with you, Yenifer. When I watch some movies after reading a book, sometimes, it is not like the book that the movie is based on. Movie is good, but the emotional charge of book is totally different. People can imagine more creatively than the technique of movie.

  11. Geez that is a strong debating topic but for sure books are better. Also watching a movie, sitting on the sofa like a bag of potatoes wearing pjs. And a big bag of popcorn with soda are strong reasons to watch the movie first
